True/Grit is a celebration of northern realism and all its complex beauties. It draws on the Amber/Side collective’s unique film and photographic collection, which, growing out of a 44 year on-going engagement with the North East of England, holds works of extraordinary truth/beauty/grit by some of the world’s finest documentary photographers. The exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the ideas and assumptions that underpin the projections and presentations of northern lives and landscapes. Some of my documentary work from 1993, which is part of the amber collection, is shown here. More work from England here.
"The Raw and the Cooked" is the most recent of my published books. Joerg Colberg writes about the book in his blog."You don’t have to be an insider to enjoy it (much like, let’s face it, you don’t have to be a photobook insider to enjoy many others). But once you take the time, you start seeing a lot of details, and your level of appreciation changes. And that’s really what photography is all about: The enjoyment to be had from looking, and the enjoyment to be had from seeing a little bit more, or something a little bit different every time you come back."
